Shade has more than one growing condition

Describe both the light and the soil before choosing flowers for a shaded corner.

Name the source of shade

Observe whether a wall, building or tree blocks the light, and whether that changes during the day or season. RHS shade-gardening guidance distinguishes different situations and notes the relationship between tree roots and dry soil. Write a description more useful than “the dark bit.” A site beneath deciduous branches may offer a different seasonal opportunity from a corner shaded by a permanent structure. Take photographs at several times while keeping the viewpoint consistent.

Check moisture without guessing from light

Shade does not automatically mean damp soil. Inspect the intended planting area and consider nearby roots, overhangs and runoff. Compare the conditions with species-specific growing requirements before selecting from a general list of shade plants. Avoid digging among important tree roots or altering levels around established trees without appropriate advice. A smaller suitable planting area can be a better starting point than trying to transform every difficult inch beneath a mature canopy.

Choose a test group with a purpose

Select a few compatible plants whose mature spread you can accommodate. Label them and record what you expect them to contribute: flowers at a particular time, leaf contrast or ground-level coverage. Observe establishment before expanding the group. If a plant fails, review the whole description of the site rather than blaming shade alone. The exercise should leave you with a better account of the corner and a plant list that responds to its actual conditions.
