Mulch is a surface treatment with a purpose

Choose it for the planting and soil rather than using it as a universal finishing layer.

Decide what you want it to do

RHS guidance describes mulching as a way to conserve moisture, suppress weeds and influence soil conditions. Those benefits still need to be matched to the material, site and plants. Write down the main reason for mulching your patch before buying in volume. A border of moisture-loving perennials and a collection of plants sensitive to damp crowns may need different approaches. A tidy appearance alone does not establish that the same material belongs everywhere.

Prepare before covering

Identify and deal appropriately with unwanted growth before hiding the surface. Check soil moisture and the position of crowns and stems. Follow suitable guidance for material, depth and clearance rather than piling mulch directly against every plant. Measure the area and calculate the quantity needed so the job does not end with an excessive heap around the last clump. Keep labels visible and mark any dormant plants that would otherwise disappear beneath the new layer.

Inspect what happens afterward

Return to the patch after watering or rain and check the soil below the surface. Record whether the mulch stays in place, interferes with maintenance or conceals a developing problem. Replenishment should respond to the material’s condition and purpose rather than an automatic urge to add another layer each season. Keep the supplier and product details if you need to discuss unexpected results. A useful mulch makes the border easier to manage while respecting the plants it surrounds.
