Choose zinnias by height and growing space

A shared flower name can cover quite different roles in a garden.

Read beyond the packet picture

Zinnias offer varied habits and flower forms, as Minnesota Extension’s growing guide illustrates. A compact edging variety and a taller cutting variety do not occupy the same space or serve the same purpose. Read the height, spread and growing instructions before sowing. Decide whether you want flowers near a path, material for a vase or a broad patch of color. That decision makes the variety information useful instead of merely interesting.

Give the planting a clear location

Choose a suitable sunny growing area and follow the variety’s spacing guidance. Avoid placing every seedling close together just because they look small on planting day. Mark mature plant positions on the surface before transplanting so the intended arrangement remains visible. Check how you will reach the center to inspect foliage and harvest stems. An accessible planting is easier to observe when a problem first appears, rather than after neighboring plants hide the lower leaves.

Compare varieties on your own terms

If trying more than one variety, label them clearly and photograph the flowers beside the names. Note the qualities relevant to their role: overall shape in a border, manageable height or stems suited to your containers. Keep weather and site conditions with the observations. One season can suggest what to grow again without proving a universal ranking. Finish with a shortlist based on your actual use, rather than buying another assortment because the packet photographs are irresistible.
