A seed packet is a set of growing instructions

Read the information that determines timing, space and aftercare before opening the packet.

Separate the picture from the procedure

The photograph tells you why you might want the plant. The instructions tell you whether you can grow it in the space and season you have. RHS seed-sowing resources explain the value of starting appropriate plants under protection. Read each packet for sowing method, depth, timing and eventual spacing rather than applying one routine to an entire shopping basket. Check any unfamiliar term before the seeds are scattered across a tray.

Translate the packet into your space

Estimate how many established plants you can accommodate and sow a manageable quantity with a reasonable allowance for losses. Count the available tray area, growing-on containers and suitable light. Local climate may require a different timetable from a general packet calendar. Put the planting-out requirements beside the sowing date so the plan includes more than germination. A tray of successful seedlings still needs somewhere suitable to go when its occupants become larger.

Keep the packet with the record

Label the container before sowing and retain the packet or a clear photograph of both sides. Record what you actually did, including departures from the instructions. That is useful if germination is uneven or the flowering season differs from expectation. Avoid diagnosing old seed, poor medium or bad weather without evidence. The first question is whether the method and conditions matched the requirements of the particular plant. Clear records make that question possible to answer. Store remaining seeds according to their instructions and keep them clearly identified for any later sowing.
